Maizie Imitates Her Hero Jeff Corwin
The sun was out again today so we took off for the dog park. Maizie is totally in her element at the dog park. She is more outgoing there than me. Here are a series of questions she asks of every dog owner.
*What kind of dog do you have?
*How old is your dog?
*What is your dog's name?
*Does your dog know any tricks?
Maizie follows up with a kind comment like, "Your dog is pretty." Every once in a while she will say something like this, "Do you know that your dog is a bully? Sometimes our dog Stella is a bully." She does not say these comments to be mean they are simply observations.
Everyone is cool with Maizie and answer her questions despite being asked them repeatedly. Maizie has her favorite dogs and owners who she no longer asks the same questions. With those special few she moves on to more in depth dog question and answer sessions. The dogs that play with her and show her attention are her favorites.
At one point today she sat on the bench with her head down and said, "Ma, I am so sad." We were at the dog park! Maizie is never sad at the dog park. I asked her why and she said, "The dogs won't play catch with me." It was true, there were about eight dogs there at that moment and all they wanted to do was run, wrestle and sniff.
We sat on the bench for a while and Maizie took this shot of us together with the iPhone. I thought it was cute.
After a while most of the other dogs went home and Maizie was able to roam. Searching in a mud hole she found a long worm.
I watched as she gently put the worm over the stick.
Next, she looked at me with the biggest smile! "Look! Look! It is a snake! A beauty! See it! See it!" She was working like Jeff Corwin, searching for a "snake" and placing it over the long 'hook' so I could get a close up look. Maizie was so excited with her find. After I looked and took her requested photos she dug a hole for the "snake" and put it back in its little home.
To an observer this is just one more kid playing in the mud. But, for me this is another one of those dazlious moments that I breathe in and appreciate. It is progress in playing.

What a great moment. I too am a fan of Jeff Corwin, but that worm, er ... I mean snake, looked like it would do quite nicely on a hook and dropped into the water
Oh, so many good things about that trip to the dog park. The social interaction, asking questions, telling you how she feels... wonderful progress!
This post made me so happy, from the wonderful pictures to your descriptions of what happens at the dog park. Clearly Maizie is in her element when she is around animals and other people who love animals. She looks so relaxed and so happy. The picture of you two together is just wonderful. I love it. Here's hoping this warm weather will help her feel better on all levels. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as well as keeping you all in my prayers!
XOXOX
OK, first of all, the picture of the two of you is NOT cute...it's GORGEOUS! Seriously.
I love everything about this post, especially M's enthusiasm and energy level being so high! She's such a great kid, Marla. And the normalcy of this day in the dog park is exactly what you said...DAZLIOUS!
Great pictures! My son loves to go to the park and 'look for creatures'. We currently have some random horseshoe crab parts and a few other sea creature parts in the trunk of my husbands car. Summer time brings a bounty of 'goodness' for us! Maizie looks so happy!!!
There's such a range of emotions and insights in this post---and the young explorer is such a star!
Those moments are what makes it all worthwhile. And that photo is amazing.
Indeed it is! And it's so nice to see you guys outside having fun. That's what it's all about.
That is really cute and sweet. That's great she loves animals. Isn't it cute when they imitate shows from t.v. Today Parker was pretending to hold and phone and answer it, "City morgue". He was watching cat in the hat all day.
That is so wonderful Marla. I love all the pictures especially the one of the two of you.
That's great that she has a hero and can imagine being him.
I used to do stuff like this a lot when I was a kid. I got to see a horseshoe crab in marine science. It was neat.
That's cool to get to see plants and animals and such. I always like these opportunities as a kid.
Definitely a moment to breath in and appreciate... beautiful!! As is the photo of you and Maizie - gorgeous!!
xx
These are the moments that keep us going. We can set aside the less than positive things we hear from schools, doctors, other people etc. We can forget the lack of sleep and the constant care our children need. We can forget all the difficult times and revel in the times of worms, dogs, mud and smiles!
When Nathan and I lived in your house we loved taking Cappy to the dog park. It's too far away now and I miss going. I wonder if Cappy was ever a bully?
The dog park seems like it would be a great place for Maizie to explore. People, dogs, nature, so much to learn about!
She has just a happy face. There's no time to be sad when you're playing in the park.
Crystal xx
Those pictures are great! She looks so happy. I used to love digging for worms and then naming them.
I want to get a dog just so we can go to the dog park. Well, there are other reasons too, but that dog park seems so cool. The picture of you and Maize is excellent. It conveys the feeling of these nice days we've been having lately. I need to e-mail you so I can get to Maize's blog. I've been meaning to do that for awhile, but keep forgetting.
This post gave me the biggest smile, Marla! It's wonderful to see her outside playing again - and so creatively too. She has a marvelous sense of humor!
Good to see the two of you smiling and having a great time at the park! She must be a brave girl, I'd have never touched that worm/snake even if you'd paid me.
you are so right the photo of you both is priceless
